On Saturday, July 29, 2023, at approximately 12:20 PM, the Dothan Houston County E911 Center received a call reporting the caller had just shot an intruder who forced entry into the residence and began assaulting another individual. The incident took place in the 900 block of McCallister Road in the city limits of Dothan.
The suspect arrived at the location looking for his ex-girlfriend who he believed was there. The suspect, who was a passenger of a vehicle when it arrived, got out and forced entry through the main entrance of the residence, then forced entry through a second door where he was met by the homeowner who tried to stop him. The suspect forced himself past the homeowner and proceeded to kick a third door until the door was destroyed. He then pulled the ex-girlfriend from the third room and began assaulting her. The homeowner retrieved a handgun and began demanding the suspect to stop assaulting the ex-girlfriend. At that time, the suspect began to charge at the homeowner who then shot him one time in the upper torso. The suspect exited the residence and entered the same vehicle and left. The suspect was dropped off at Southeast Health Emergency Department where he was later pronounced dead.
The driver and vehicle were located a short time later by the Houston County Sheriff’s department outside the city limits of Dothan. The driver and the vehicle were held for investigative purposes.
The deceased has been identified as, Charles Kevin Sexton, 55 years old of Ashford, Alabama. This is an active and ongoing investigation. After consulting with the Houston County District Attorney, it is not believed there will be any charges against the homeowner for the shooting death of Sexton due to him acting in self defense on his own property as well as for the protection of another individual. If there are any criminal charges forthcoming, they will be determined during the duration of this ongoing investigation.
