Update on Florida Avenue Murder

On May 25, 2019 at approximately 1:50 P.M. Dothan Police responded to a firearm assault at 416 Florida Ave. Apt #1. On secene they found Shawn Bernard Callins and Kenisha Lashea Lee shot multiple times each.

It was determined that the suspects entered the apartment forcing their way in the front door in an attempt to commit a robbery. Once inside they began shooting at the victims, striking each one multiple times. The suspects then fled the scene on foot.

Rescue responded and transported both Mr. Callins and Ms. Lee to Southeast Health Emergency Room where Mr. Callins succumbed to his injuries and passed away. Ms. Lee was shot in both legs and femur, shattering her femur. Ms. Lee was Air Lifted to a Florida Hospital for treatment of her injuries. Ms. Lee was 6 ½ -months pregnant. Once arriving in Florida Ms. Lee had to have an emergency C-Section and delivered the baby. The baby is in NICU in critical condition, and Ms. Lee is in ICU in Critical condition with a Rod and Guide in her Femur.

During the investigation two of the suspects were identified as B/M Willie Gerome Blackmon and B/M Kaleb Tyreak Tubbs both 18 years of age, and both of Dothan.

Both Blackmon and Tubbs were later apprehended and through the investigation both suspects were charged with Capital Murder relating to the Robbery and attempted Murder for shooting Ms. Lee.

Both Blackmon and Tubbs are in custody at the Houston County jail under No Bond.

Arrest Made in Recent Vehicle Break-ins

On May 13th and 14th Dothan Police received reports of fifteen vehicle break-ins on the east side of Dothan. The reports were from Crossing Ln., Hidden Lake Subdivision, and Brookhill Drive. An investigation began in the crimes and video was released of one of the suspects.

On May 16th the investigator working the case was off duty and made contact with a person he believed to be the suspect in the vehicle break-ins at the Walker’s Deluxe Motel in the 3200 block of E. Main Street. The suspect was identified as 21 year old Nhayquan Travone Bethel of Dothan. He was in the company of 23 year old Shantoria Lashaey Owens, also of Dothan.

Based on information gathered during the investigation Investigators conducted a search warrant of the room and vehicle belonging to the two suspects and recovered property taken from the recent break-ins. The property recovered included several firearms, purses, and wallets belonging to the victims.

Nhayquan Travone Bethel has been charged with fourteen counts of Unlawful Breaking and Entering a Motor Vehicle and has bonds totaling $210,000.00. Shantoria Lashaey Owens has also been charged with fourteen counts of Unlawful Breaking and Entering a Motor Vehicle and also has bonds totaling $210,000.00. This investigation is ongoing and more charges may be forthcoming.

Dothan Narcotics Officers and DEA make Meth Bust

On 05/14/2019 Dothan Police Narcotics Officers and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Agents made contact with Jackie Lee King, in the 11000 block of East State Highway 52, Columbia, Alabama. During contact, King was found in possession of approximately 4 pounds of crystal methamphetamine with a street value of approximately $20,000.00. King was placed under arrest for Drug Trafficking and taken to the Dothan City Jail. King’s bond was set at $500,000.00. This arrest concludes a lengthy investigation into the methamphetamine drug trade in Dothan and the surrounding areas.

Dothan Police Make Arrest in Dusy St. Shooting

On May 8, 2019 patrol officers attempted to make a traffic stop on a maroon Honda Accord. The driver of the vehicle refused to stop and officers followed the vehicle until they were able to get it stopped at the intersection of East Selma St. and South Saint Andrews Street. At the intersection the driver of the vehicle, 21 year old Deneco Laquan Dean, backed into one of the patrol cars, then went forward and rammed another patrol vehicle before he was taken into custody by a police canine unit.

After being taken into custody officers located pills and marijuana in his possession. He was taken to Southeast Health where he was treated for minor dog bite wounds then transported to the Dothan City Jail.

Dean was also the suspect in an ongoing investigation into a shooting that occurred on May 5, 2019 in the area of Dusy St. in Dothan. Dean was charged with two counts of Attempted Assault 1st Degree, one count of Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance, and one count of Possession of Marijuana 1st Degree for his actions during the traffic stop. He was also charged with one count of Assault 1st Degree for his involvement in the shooting on Dusy Street. He has bonds totaling $85,000.00.

Officers Injured During Person Down Call

On May 5, 2019 Dothan Police Officers responded to a report of a person down call in the 1800 block of Montgomery Highway. They arrived to find 29 year old Kevin Le Monkman unconscious on the ground. 40 year old Carla Dawn Meeker was in company of Monkman.

Officers made contact with Monkman who was lying on the ground. Officers attempted to render assistance and Monkman became combative. The officers believed Monkman to be under the influence of drugs. During the struggle with Monkman one officer suffered a fractured leg and dislocated knee. Another officer suffered a broken hand. Both officers were treated at SouthEast Health for their injuries. Monkman also received treatment for minor injuries on scene.

Kevin Le Monkman was taken to the city jail after his treatment and was formally booked late yesterday afternoon. He was charged with two counts of Assault 2nd Degree and has bonds totaling $30,000.00.

Carla Dawn Meeker was charged with one count of Obstructing Governmental Operations.

Dothan High School Teacher Arrested for Sex Crime

On Friday May 3, 2019 The Dothan Police Department was notified by Dothan City Schools that a teacher from Dothan High School was possibly engaging in sexual acts with a student. Investigators responded to the school and began an investigation into the claims.

The teacher, Julia Engle (29) of Dothan, was taken to the Dothan Police Department for an interview. Engle and two students were interviewed. After interviews were completed Investigators arrested Engle and charged her with one count of a School employee engaging in a sex act with a student under the age of 19 years. The bond has been set at $30,000.00.

This investigation is ongoing and more charges could be filed at a later date.  Anyone with any additional information regarding this case is urged to contact the Dothan Police Department at 334-615-3000. All persons are innocent until proven guilty.

 

Suspect Arrested for Murder in Arlington Street Shooting

On April 18, 2019 Dothan Police responded to a shooting that occurred in the 700 block of Arlington Avenue. Officers arrived and found three victims with gunshot wounds. All of the victims were treated for their injuries at Southeast Health.

On April 23, 2019 one of the victims, Cornelius Jaquan Williams (26) passed away from his injuries. During the investigation warrants were obtained on Larry Antionette Garlington Jr. (23) of Dothan for one count of Murder and one count of Assault 1st degree. No bond has been set in this case.  On April 30, 2019 Garlington turned himself in at the Dothan Police Department and will await court proceedings.

Pursuit of Homicide Suspect

The Dothan Police Department was involved in a vehicle pursuit of a suspected homicide suspect out of North Carolina who arrived in our city on a stolen vehicle. While investigating this information police located the vehicle and attempted to complete a traffic stop however the driver fled.

The pursuit traveled around Ross Clark Circle to Montgomery Highway where the suspect turned onto Cherokee Avenue, lost control and crashed into a tree sustaining critical injuries. Police on scene rendered first aid until Medics arrived and transported the driver to a local hospital. No other occupants were in the vehicle nor were any other motorists hurt.

Public Safety was our top priority today not only taking this person into custody but also in considering the motorists on the roadway. Police were actively responding to intersections ahead of the pursuit to stop motorists from encountering the oncoming danger.

The Dothan Police Department would like to say thank you to all motorists who cooperated with these emergency stops. We would also like to thank Houston County SO for assisting us. As always a special thanks to our officers that disregarded their own safety to ensure the safety of others throughout this incident.

Two Arrested in Northside Academy Theft

On April 6, 2019 a Burglary and Theft occurred at Northside Methodist Academy in 2600 block of Redmond Road. It was determined that a U-Haul van had entered the property and left with several items totaling over $20,000.  On April 8, 2019 the U-Haul van was located in the back yard of a residence located in the 2600 block of Timothy Road along with some of the property taken during the theft.  After further investigation, W/M Andrew Phillips was arrested and charged with two counts of Theft of Property 1st and Burglary 3rd.  An additional charge of Domestic violence 2nd that occurred on August 6, 2018 in the 3000 block of Evans Dr and Breaking and Entering a Motor vehicle that occurred in 200 block of Petunia Dr.

Along with Phillips, W/M Tevin Coffman was also charged with Theft of Property 1st and Breaking and Entering a Motor Vehicle.

Andrew Phillips has bonds totaling $92,500.00.

Tevin Coffman has bonds totaling $7,500.00.

UPDATE: Traffic Fatality

On April 5th, 2019, the Dothan Police Department’s Crash Team responded to a traffic fatality at W. Main Street and North Woodburn Drive.  After the completion of the investigation, charges have been filed against white male Christopher Britt Hamm, 45 years of age, of Dothan.  Hamm has been charged with one count of Manslaughter ($60,000 bond), and one count of Assault 1st Degree ($60,000 bond).   Hamm was also charged with Driving Under the Influence at the scene of the crash.

Hamm has been processed and transferred to the Houston County Jail. All persons are innocent until proven guilty.
