CALEA Accreditation Public Comment Portal

If you have comments regarding the Dothan Police Department’s CALEA Accreditation and would like to provide information to CALEA, there is an Accreditation Public Comment Portal located at http://cimrs2.calea.org/857.

The purpose of this public portal is to receive comments regarding an agency’s compliance with CALEA standards, engagement in the service community, delivery of public safety services, and overall candidacy for accredited status. These comments can be in the form of commendations or concerns. The overall intent of the accreditation process is to provide the participating agency with information to support continuous improvement, as well as foster the pursuit of professional excellence.

IMPORTANT: CALEA is not an investigatory body and subsequently the public portal should not be used to submit information for such purposes. Additionally, there will be no response other than acknowledgement to submissions; however, the information will be considered in context to its relevancy to compliance with standards and the tenets of CALEA® Accreditation.

Dothan Woman Charged with Willful Abuse of a Child

On July 31, 2023, the Dothan Police Department received a report alleging possible child abuse of a child under the age of 12. An investigation into the allegations was immediately started which took several days to complete. As a result of the investigation, investigators have charged Aneka Cloresse Knight, 25 years old of Dothan, with one count of Willful Abuse of a Child. Her bond was set at $15,000.00. Due to the sensitive nature of this case, not further details will be released.

Theft Turns to Robbery

On Friday, August 11, 2023, at approximately 11:00 PM, officers responded to a strong-arm robbery at a local business in the 1900 block of S. Oates Street. An employee of the business stated the suspect entered the business and began concealing merchandise in his clothing. The employee attempted to stop the suspect when he began to leave without paying for the merchandise. The suspect pushed the employee out of the way and exited. Once outside, the employee attempted to stop the suspect again and the suspect assaulted the employee and fled on foot. Utilizing a K-9, officers were able to track the suspect to the rear of an adjacent business where he was found hiding in the bushes and taken into custody. The employee was not injured during this incident.

Jonathan Gregory Gunter, 37 years old of Dothan, was charged with one count of Robbery Third Degree. His bond was set at $15,000.00.

Dothan Man Charged with Robbery

On Wednesday, August 9, 2023, at approximately 9:30 PM, officers responded to a reported theft from a business in the 300 block of Columbia Highway. When officers arrived, it was determined the suspect attempted to leave the business with merchandise without paying for it. An employee attempted to stop the suspect, but the suspect assaulted the employee then left with the merchandise. Using video surveillance, the suspect was identified as Lorenzo Gregory Fortenberry and a look-out was issued for him. Later the same night, Fortenberry was located and taken into custody without incident. The employee was not injured during the incident.

Lorenzo Gregory Fortenberry, 38 years old of Dothan, was charged with one count of Robbery Third Degree. His bond was set at $10,000.00.

Shoplifting Leads to Robbery Charge

On Saturday, August 5, 2023, an Ozark man entered a business in the 2200 block of Ross Clark Circle and began concealing merchandise in his clothing. When employees attempted to confront the man, he attempted to exit the store with the merchandise without paying for it. While making his exit, the man grabbed the employees and pushed them down. A customer acting as a Good Samaritan was able to subdue the man outside the store and hold him until police arrived.

Andrew Lamont White, 55 years old of Ozark, was arrested and charged with Robbery Third Degree. His bond was set at $15,000.00.

Dothan woman charged with child porn and sex crimes

On August 3, 2023, the Dothan Police Department conducted a search warrant at the home of Allenia Crittenden, 35 years old of Dothan. She was subsequently charged with one count of possession of Child Pornography, three counts of Bestiality, and one count of Filing a False Police Report. The investigation was the result of a tip sent to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Alabama Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Investigators with the Dothan Police Department’s Special Investigation Unit obtained digital evidence that revealed Crittenden was in possession of a video file containing child sexual assault material. Videos depicting Crittenden having sexual conduct with a canine was also recovered. Additional electronic and recording devices were seized from the residence to be analyzed. The canine was recovered in the home.

Dothan Animal Services responded and took possession of the canine. The canine appeared in good health and will remain in protection of the Dothan Animal Services until legal proceedings can be filed.

Crittenden was booked in the Dothan City Jail with a bond totaling $39,000. The investigation is still ongoing.

Man Arrested for Domestic Violence and Escape

On Sunday, July 30, 2023, officers responded to a call for domestic violence in the 2600 block of Robindale Circle. The suspect, who was identified as Cavasia Adams, was believed to be in the 800 block of Chickasaw Street. Officers located the suspect on Chickasaw Street and took him into custody. While in the back of a patrol car, Adams was able to maneuver his way out of the back of the patrol car and escape while still in handcuffs after causing minor damage to the interior of the patrol car. After a short foot pursuit, Adams was taken into custody and transported to the Dothan City Jail.

Cavasia Rashaude Adams, 24 years old of Dothan, has been charged with Domestic Violence Second Degree, Destruction of State Property, and Escape Third Degree. He is currently being held in the Houston County jail with no bond.

Ashford Man Killed During a Burglary and Assault


On Saturday, July 29, 2023, at approximately 12:20 PM, the Dothan Houston County E911 Center received a call reporting the caller had just shot an intruder who forced entry into the residence and began assaulting another individual. The incident took place in the 900 block of McCallister Road in the city limits of Dothan.

The suspect arrived at the location looking for his ex-girlfriend who he believed was there. The suspect, who was a passenger of a vehicle when it arrived, got out and forced entry through the main entrance of the residence, then forced entry through a second door where he was met by the homeowner who tried to stop him. The suspect forced himself past the homeowner and proceeded to kick a third door until the door was destroyed. He then pulled the ex-girlfriend from the third room and began assaulting her. The homeowner retrieved a handgun and began demanding the suspect to stop assaulting the ex-girlfriend. At that time, the suspect began to charge at the homeowner who then shot him one time in the upper torso. The suspect exited the residence and entered the same vehicle and left. The suspect was dropped off at Southeast Health Emergency Department where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver and vehicle were located a short time later by the Houston County Sheriff’s department outside the city limits of Dothan. The driver and the vehicle were held for investigative purposes.

The deceased has been identified as, Charles Kevin Sexton, 55 years old of Ashford, Alabama. This is an active and ongoing investigation. After consulting with the Houston County District Attorney, it is not believed there will be any charges against the homeowner for the shooting death of Sexton due to him acting in self defense on his own property as well as for the protection of another individual. If there are any criminal charges forthcoming, they will be determined during the duration of this ongoing investigation.

Shots Fired on Arlington Avenue

On Friday, July 28, 2023, at approximately 7:25 PM, the Dothan Police Department was notified of a firearm assault that occurred in the 800 block of Arlington Avenue. One male victim who was sitting in a vehicle at the time of the shots being fired was transported to a local hospital and was believed to have been shot in the back and neck area. While receiving medical treatment, it was determined the injuries appear to be metal fragment wounds and not gunshot wounds. The victim’s injuries appear to be minor at this time and he will be released from the hospital. 

No motive or suspect identification have been confirmed but officers are looking for a blue passenger car that was last seen traveling north on South Edgewood Drive. Investigators and officers are still working this case and gathering information.

Woman Shot During a Domestic

On Friday, July 28, 2023, at approximately 4:50 AM, officers were dispatched to a local hospital for a gunshot victim that arrived by personal vehicle. The adult female victim arrived with an injury to the head that was later determined to be the result of a gunshot. The victim was conscious, alert, and talking but was taken to surgery due to the moderate to severe injury she sustained. Through the course of the investigation, it was determined her boyfriend, Clint Edward Browning, was the person responsible for the injury that occurred during an altercation between the two while in the 1300 block of Coe Dairy Road.

Clint Edward Browning, 45 years old of Dothan, was charged with one count of Domestic Violence First Degree. He is currently in the Houston County Jail with no bond.
