Arrest Made on Shooting on South Oates Street

On June 8, 2021, the Dothan patrol officers responded to reports of a shooting at a residence in the 1900 block of South Oates Street.  Officers found a victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound after a verbal altercation with the suspect.  The victim was transported to a local hospital where he remains in critical but stable condition.  Investigators from the Criminal Investigations Division began the investigation and quickly developed a suspect.  On June 9, 2021, the suspect was taken into custody.  Investigators charged Demarques Ward with attempted murder in relation to the shooting.

Demarques Antonio Ward (19) has been charged with Attempted Murder with a bond of $60,000.

Dothan Police Make Drug Arrest

 

On May 25, 2021, Dothan investigators were preparing to execute a search warrant at a hotel in the 2100 block of Ross Clark Circle. Before the search warrant could be executed, the suspect exited the hotel room and entered a vehicle in the parking lot. Investigators were able to block the vehicle into a parking space. Officers ordered the suspect, 38 year old Dedrick Farold Smith of Columbus, Georgia, to put his vehicle in park and get out of the vehicle. He then accelerated, rammed one of the police vehicles and fled the parking lot.

Officers pursued Smith round Ross Clark Circle to the intersection of Third Avenue where he collided with another police vehicle and again fled the scene traveling North on Third Avenue. Smith travelled to the intersection of Third Avenue and Cottonwood Road where he collided into the rear of an innocent bystander causing severe damage to both vehicles.

Both Smith and the victim from the vehicle crash were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Dedrick Farold Smith has been taken into custody and charged with Two (2) counts of Attempted Assault 1st Degree, One (1) count of Assault 1st Degree, Drug Trafficking (Methamphetamine), Certain Persons Forbidden to Possess a Firearm, Possession of Marijuana 1st Degree, Receiving Stolen Property 2nd Degree,  and Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance (Synthetic Marijuana). Smith also had three active warrants in Houston County Al. One Failure to Appear for Trafficking Methamphetamines’, one Failure to Appear for Possession of Marijuana 1st Degree, and a warrant for Escape 2nd Degree. No Bond had been set in this case. Additional charges are pending.

Update on Murder from Alabama Avenue

On April 29, 2021, Criminal Investigators from the Violent Crimes Unit and Forensic Services Unit began the investigation into the murder of Johnnie Settle in the 700 block of Alabama Avenue.  In the evening hours of May 4, 2021, the suspect in the murder was taken into custody.  Investigators were able to make contact with multiple witnesses who were able to identify the shooter.  The suspect was identified as a 14 year old juvenile.  The juvenile was charged with murder in juvenile court and placed in the Southeast Alabama Diversion Center.  Due to the age of the suspect, no other information about the juvenile will be released.

Police Seeking Information on Murder on Alabama Ave

On April 29, 2021, Dothan Police responded to the 700 block of Alabama Avenue for a subject suffering from gunshot wounds.  Before police and medics arrived on scene, the victim had been taken by personal vehicle to a local hospital.  Despite medical intervention, the victim was pronounced dead at the hospital.  The victim has been identified as Johnnie Settles (27) of Dothan.

Dothan Man Charged with Capital Murder in Scott Road Murder Case

On April 28, 2021, Dothan Police Officers responded to a residence in the 2500 block of Scott Road for a medical call for service.  When officers arrived on scene, they found a male victim in the residence suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.  The victim, Ricky Turner, was identified by family members and was pronounced dead on scene.

While officers and investigators were on scene, a subject arrived at the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Trooper Post on Montgomery Highway with information about the crime.  After a lengthy interview and investigation on scene, investigators had enough probable cause to charge the individual that showed at the Trooper Post with the crime.  Dexter Elliott Marsh Jr. was charged with one count of Capital Murder.  The investigation is still ongoing and anyone with information about the case is encouraged to contact Crimestoppers at 334-793-7000 or the Dothan Police Department at 334-793-0215.

Traffic Fatality on South Oates

On April 23, 2021, Dothan Police were dispatched to a vehicle accident involving a pedestrian in the 4600 block of South Oates Street. A small SUV was traveling south bound on South Oates Street and struck James Allen Sharp, 41 years of age, of Bonifay, Florida. Mr. Sharp was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident.

The crash is being investigated by the Dothan Police Department Crash Team.

Dothan Man Arrested on Rape and Sodomy Charges

On April 12, 2021, the Dothan Police Department was made aware of a sexual assault that took place at Dothan High School, 3209 Reeves Street, in Dothan.  The offenses occurred between March 8, 2021 and March 12, 2021.  As a result of the investigation, investigators arrested and charged Donovan Franklin as an adult with Rape 1st degree and two counts of Sodomy 1st Degree.  Due to the sensitive nature of the case, no further details will be released.  Additional arrests are possible.

19 Year Old Charged with Two Gas Station Robberies

On December 19, 2020 around 11:00 pm, an unknown suspect entered a gas station in the 3400 block of Denton Road armed with a firearm and demanded money from the clerk.  The suspect collected an undisclosed amount of cash, vaping equipment, and cigars then fled the scene on foot.  Investigators had been working leads in an attempt to identify the person responsible.

On January 27, 2021 at about 05:00 am, an unknown suspect, believed to be the same suspect as the prior robbery, entered the store armed with a firearm and demanded money from the clerk.  The suspect collected an undisclosed amount of cash, vaping equipment, and cigars then fled the scene on foot.  Investigators canvassed the area near where the robbery occurred and came to an address in the 2100 block of Oakdale Driver, which is a short distance from the store.

Investigators were speaking with a 19 year old man who came to the door.  Through some standard questions, the man, identified as Romaine McFarland, confessed to robbing the store on both occasions.  A search warrant was conducted on the residence and items were found that incriminated McFarland in both robberies.  Among the items found was cash determined to be from the robbery, cigars like the ones taken, vaping equipment like the ones taken, and clothes that were similar to clothes worn by the suspect in both robberies.

Romaine McFarland (19) of Dothan was arrested and charged with two counts of Robbery 1st degree with bonds totaling $120,000.

Montgomery Man Arrested for Sunday Murder

On January 17, 2021, Dothan Police Investigators began a homicide investigation into the death of Willis Rambo Jr. in the 900 block of Morris Street.  Investigators have been reviewing video footage from the area, interviewing witnesses, and attempting to locate persons of interest.  One of those persons of interest was located in Montgomery, AL yesterday and arrested on unrelated warrants.  The suspect was transported to Dothan and interviewed by Investigators.

Christian De-Andre McCallister (19) has been arrested and charged with murder in connection to the death of Rambo Jr. and booked into the Dothan City Jail.  McCallister is being held without bond.  As the investigation continues, more arrests are possible.

1st Murder of 2021 Claims life of 20 Year Old

On January 17, 2021 at about 4:00 pm, Dothan Police Officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Morris Street for a firearm assault.  When officers arrived on scene, they found the victim, identified as Willis Rambo Jr. (20) of Dothan, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.  Officers and Paramedics performed life saving treatment on Rambo but efforts were unsuccessful.  Rambo was pronounced dead at the scene.
