Police promotion ceremony held at Opera House

The Dothan Police Department held a promotion ceremony recognizing ten members’ promotions to various ranks. Following recent promotions and retirements, the department has promoted the following personnel as they appear in the photo from left to right:

Easy Like Sunday Morning!

This morning, a little after 8:30 a.m. an alert DPD patrolman performed a traffic stop in the 800 block of Chickasaw Street. The driver led officers to a backyard where another person was found sitting in a parked car. Additional officers arrived and conducted an investigation which led to the discovery of an assortment of illegal drugs.

The original driver had a warrant for his arrest and the second subject was found in possession of Methamphetamine, Cocaine, Crack-Cocaine, Marijuana packaged for sale, and an assortment of pills. He was charged with Trafficking in Methamphetamine, Possession of Marijuana 1st Degree, and Unlawful Possession of four other Controlled Substances.

One Arrested in Haven Drive Shooting

On October 1st, 2019 Dothan Police responded to the 400 block of Haven Dr. in reference to a firearm assault. The victim, 31 year old Michael White, was located and had a minor injury on the left side of his face. White was treated by rescue at the scene.

White stated that he got into an argument with his ex girlfriend, 30 year old Malika Rashan Beacham . White stated that Beacham became violent during the argument and shocked him in the abdomen with a stun gun. White stated that he got into his vehicle and left the scene. He stated that Beacham followed him and when he stopped she exited her vehicle with a .45 caliber pistol and fired two shots at him. One of the bullets grazed Whites face. Beacham then fled the scene, but later turned herself in at the Dothan Police Department.

Beacham was charged with one count of Attempted Assault 1st Degree. She has a $30,000.00 bond.

All persons are innocent until proven guilty.

Arrest Made in Stabbing on S. Lena St.

On October 1st, 2019 Dothan Police responded to a report of an edged weapon assault in the 600 block of S. Lena Street. When officers arrived they located the victim sitting on the porch with a stab wound to his upper chest. Rescue was called to the scene and transported the victim to Southeast Health with non life threatening injuries.

The victim stated that he was stabbed with a knife by his girlfriend,  18 year old Laprincea Elease Bell.  Bell was located by police hiding in a bedroom inside of a residence in the 900 block of S. Alice Street a short time later. She was taken into custody without incident.

The victim was admitted to Southeast Health for his injuries and is listed in stable condition. Bell was charged with one count of Domestic Violence 2nd degree and has a $5,000.00 bond.

All persons are innocent until proven guilty.

Local deaf community recognizes officer

On Saturday, September 28, 2019, members of our local deaf community presented our own Lieutenant Rachel David with an appreciation award. The presentation was made at the Deaf Awareness Picnic held at Eastgate Park in conjunction with Deaf Awareness Month. The event was attended by approximately 100 people.

Ms. Gwen, a member of Dothan’s deaf community, cited Lt. David’s passionate involvement in helping bridge communication barriers faced by the deaf when dealing with law enforcement. Lt. David’s commitment in attending American Sign Language classes offered at the Dothan, Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) was recognized.

Ms. Gwen pointed out that Lt. David regularly helps members of the deaf community even when she is off duty.

Soldier Arrested for Drug Possession

The Dothan Police Department Vice Intelligence Division conducted a traffic stop on 09/18/2019 following a drug investigation involving a member of the Alabama National Guard. Investigators recovered LSD, Methamphetamine, Marijuana, and drug paraphernalia during the course of the traffic stop.

Investigators have arrested and charged 28 year old Charles Kalid Segrest, of Azalae Road Slocomb, with Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance (LSD), Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance (meth), Possession of Marijuana 2nd degree, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

All persons arrested are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Search Warrant Leads to Burglary Arrest and Fire

On September 17, 2019 Dothan Police executed a search warrant in the 5000 block of Third Avenue. The search warrant was related to a Burglary that occurred at the Outpost gun store located in the 2600 block of Ross Clark Circle. The suspect, Jefferey Wilson (30), was also a suspect in a burglary of a pawn shop in Geneva Alabama.

When investigators arrived the suspect barricaded himself inside the fifth wheel RV that he was living in. He refused officers commands to exit the camper and the Dothan SRT and Houston County SRT teams both responded the location. While officers were attempting to talk the suspect out of the RV, smoke began coming out of the roof of the camper. Smoke quickly turned to flames and Wilson exited through a window at the rear of the camper and was taken into custody and moved to a safe location.

Dothan Fire Department as well as Rehobeth Fire Department extinguished the fire, however the camper was a total loss. After the fire was extinguished officers were able to recover evidence from both burglaries.

Jefferey Bruce Wilson was charged with one count of burglary 3rd Degree, one count of Arson 3rd Degree and no bond has been set in this case. Wilson will also face charges in Geneva County.

Crash on East Burdeshaw

A Dothan Police Officer traveling on East Burdeshaw Street witnessed a vehicle coming towards him lose control and crash entrapping the driver and catching on fire. Within seconds two additional officers arrived to assist and were able to extinguish the fire. Dothan fire department responded and the patient was able to be taken to a local hospital for further treatment. The extent of the driver’s injuries are unknown but a preliminary investigation reveals the driver may have been under the influence at the time of the crash. Further charges may be pending following the investigation.
