Inmate Assaulted at the Dothan City Jail

On Sunday, March 12, 2023, officers responded to an assault on an inmate at the Dothan City Jail. Officers found the victim inmate suffering from a facial injury that was caused by a plastic handle of a toothbrush that had been sharpened down into a point and used as a weapon. This weapon is commonly referred to as a “shank”.

The suspect inmate, identified as Tarik Tramon Hawkins, was having a verbal altercation with the victim inmate during which time another inmate, Zyshawn Codaun Coker, provided the weapon to Hawkins. Hawkins took possession of the weapon and used it on the victim before laying it down. Then, another inmate, Romillo Jamal Porter, retrieved the weapon and attempted to hide it in a cell. The weapon was recovered by officers during a search of the cell.

As a result, three individuals have been charged. Tarik Tramon Hawkins, 25 years-old of Dothan, has been charged with one count of Assault Second Degree and one count of Promoting Prison Contraband First Degree.

Zyshawn Codaun Coker, 21 years-old of Dothan, has been charged with one count of Promoting Prison Contraband First Degree.

Romillo Jamal Porter, 27 years-old of Dothan, has been charged with one count of Promoting Prison Contraband First Degree.

Due to the fact these charges are felonies, all three individuals have been transferred to the Houston County Jail where they are being held with no bond.

The victim received treatment at a local hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

 

 

Weekend shooting wounds three, one is in custody

On March 4, 2023 the Dothan Police Department responded to reports of an Assault in the 3000 block of Ross Clark Circle. Upon arrival officers found three victims had been shot with a firearm. Investigators responded to the scene and were able to identify the shooter, Antinio Zy’Keith Turner of Dothan. At this time, Turner has been arrested for three counts of Assault I. He is currently being held in the Houston County Jail with no bond. Victims were treated at area hospitals, and their injuries are not life threatening.

Dothan Man Charged with Willful Abuse of a Child

On Thursday, February 23, 2023, an infant child was presented to a local pediatric facility for treatment of a possible facial injury. Medical personnel immediately realized the severity of the injury and had the child transported to a local hospital or further evaluation. It appeared the child had some type of impact injury to the area of the forehead and eyes. The Dothan Police Department was notified and immediately began an investigation. It was determined the child was in the care and custody of his father at the time of the injury. The father’s explanation of the injury was not consistent with the type and severity of the injury. As a result, 25 year-old Christopher Curtis Rodriguez of Dothan was arrested and charged with one count of Willful Abuse of a Child.  His bond was set at $15,000.00.

It is believed that after the child has time to heal, he will make a full recovery.

Woman Assaulted Police Officer

On Wednesday, February 22, 2023, officers responded to the 800 block of Whiddon Street for an intoxicated and disorderly person. Officers made contact with the suspect, Latedrus Rhodes, and attempted to have her leave the property at the request of the property owner. When asked to do so, Rhodes refused. Officers advised Rhodes she was being arrested and began taking her into custody. Rhodes began to resist and fight with officers during which time she bit an officer on the arm causing minimal injury.

Latedrus Rhodes, 29 years-old of Dothan, was charged with one count of Assault Second Degree.  Her bond was set at $15,000.00.

Man Charged with Attempted Assault

During the early morning hours of Friday, January 27, 2023, two individuals engaged in a verbal altercation in the yard of a residence in the 100 block of Michigan Drive. During that altercation, Corey Ray Chaney fired a handgun at the victim, grazing him on the neck. The victim sustained minor injury that is non-life threatening. Corey Ray Chaney, 29 years old of Dothan, was charged with one count of Attempted Assault First Degree. His bond was set at $30,000.00.

Firearm assault leaves one dead

On Thursday, December 15, 2022, at approximately 6:58 P.M., officers responded to the 1300 block of Alexander Drive to the report of a firearm assault in which one person had been shot. When officers arrived on scene, they confirmed there was in fact one victim that had already been transported to Southeast Health by a personal vehicle. Officers arrived at the hospital and discovered the victim suffered from a single gunshot to the upper torso. The victim was in critical condition and was immediately taken to surgery where he succumbed to his injury. The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Alfonso Morrissette, of Dothan.

On the night prior, Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at approximately 6:15 P.M., two suspects shot at Morrisette at the same location, but he was not hit. Various residences and vehicles were hit during this incident. It has now been determined 20-year-old Zyshawn Codaun Coker and 19-year-old Keith Shukar Helms, both from Dothan, are the two suspects responsible for shooting at Morrissette on Wednesday night.

Zyshawn Coker has been charged with three counts of Shooting into an Occupied Building, one count of Shooting into an Unoccupied Building, one count of Shooting into an Unoccupied Vehicle and one count of Attempted Murder. These charges are in reference to the incident that occurred Wednesday night.

When located, Helms will be charged with the same charges in reference to the incident that occurred Wednesday night.

Thursday night’s incident in which Morrissette died, is still under investigation. Man Shot by Roommate During Altercation

On Thursday, December 8, 2022, at approximately 1:00 P.M., officers responded to Southeast Health Emergency Room where a victim of a firearm assault showed up by personal vehicle for treatment. It was determined the firearm assault occurred in the 600 Block of East Newton Street inside a residence where the victim and several other individuals live together. The victim was involved in a physical altercation with one of the roommates and during that altercation another roommate, 54-year-old Robert Henry Humboles, of Dothan, produced a handgun and fired one round into the upper torso of the victim. The victim’s injury was non-life threatening. Humboles fled the scene and has not been located. Once located, Humboles will be charged with one count of Attempted Murder.

During the investigation, one of the roommates, 41-year-old Darlene Nicole Redd, of Dothan, gave multiple accounts of what took place and provided false information to officers to divert attention away from Humboles as the suspect. Redd was charged with one count of Hindering Prosecution First Degree. Her bond was set at $15,000.00.

Man Assaulted with Ax

On Thursday, December 8, 2022, at approximately 9:07 A.M. officers responded to the 1000 block of Greentree Avenue for a burglary in which the suspect was assaulting the victim inside the residence with an ax. Upon their arrival, they found the victim holding the suspect down waiting for the police to arrive.

The suspect, 59-year-old Timothy Brown of Dothan, arrived at the residence and forced his way inside uninvited. Brown and the victim have had an ongoing dispute between them. Brown was armed with an ax and began assaulting the victim. After being struck with the ax, the victim was able to take the ax away from Brown and began to hold him down. While being held down, Brown pulled a pocketknife and began cutting the victim’s hand. Brown was immediately taken into custody when officers arrived.

The victim was taken to Southeast Health where he was treated for injuries he sustained from being assaulted with the ax and pocketknife. His injuries were not life threatening and he is expected to make a full recovery.

Brown was also taken to Southeast Health to be treated for injuries he sustained from the victim during the altercation. After his release from the hospital, Brown was charged with one count of Burglary First Degree and one count of Attempted Murder. His bond was set at $90,000.00.

Arrest Made in Peanut Festival Parade Shooting That Left One Dead

On Saturday, November 12, 2022, while the National Peanut Festival Parade was on going, a group of individuals engaged in a fight near the intersection of West Main Street and Montana Street. During the fight, at least one individual produced a gun and fired into the group hitting two victims. One victim, 22-year-old Garyoun Tyrone Fluellen, of Dothan, received one gunshot to the upper torso. He was transported to Southeast Health where he was pronounced deceased. The second victim received two gunshots to the upper torso and was transported to Southeast Health where he underwent surgery.

As the investigation progressed, we received assistance from our community which helped bring this case to a successful conclusion. The shooter was quickly identified as Mekhi Nasir Lawton, 18 years old of Dothan. Warrants were immediately obtained on Lawton for one count of Murder and one count of Assault First Degree. Lawton turned himself in just before midnight last night. His bond has been set at $1.53 Million.

Dothan Man Charged with Assault

On Wednesday, October 26, 2022, the Dothan Police Department responded to Southeast Health to the report of an edge weapon assault. The victim stated she was visiting the suspect in the 500 block of North Herring Street when the suspect, Kenneth Phil Shoemake, began swinging a knife at her and cut her several times on the arm and back. The victim was treated at the hospital for minor injuries.

The suspect, Kenneth Phil Shoemake, 64 years old of Dothan, was arrested and charged with one count of Assault Second Degree. His bond was set at $15,000.00.
