UPDATE: Suspect Identified in Tuesday’s Roadway Murder

UPDATE:  Suspect, 22 year old Kameron Zamir Head, turned himself in at the Dothan Police Department on Tuesday, September 19, 2023.

 

On Tuesday night, September 12, 2023, at approximately 10:30 PM Dothan Police Officers and Criminal Investigators responded to a murder that occurred near the 2300 block of Denton Road.

Twenty-two year old Zion Brown of Dothan was the driver and only occupant of his vehicle traveling on Denton Road. Brown was struck by one of several bullets that were fired into his vehicle, killing him. His vehicle traveled off the roadway and through a vacant lot before coming to a stop on Murray Road.

Investigators have worked around the clock since the incident occurred. On Thursday, September 14, 2023, investigators obtained one warrant for shooting into an occupied vehicle and one warrant for Capital Murder for 22 year old Kameron Zamir Head of Dothan.  We are asking anyone who may know the whereabouts of Head to please call the Dothan Police Department at (334)615-3000.  The Dothan Police Department will stringently guard and protect the identity of anyone who would like to help in an anonymous capacity.

Dothan Man Murdered while Driving

On Tuesday night, September 12, 2023, at approximately 10:30 PM the Dothan Houston County Emergency Operations Center was notified of a single vehicle accident with critical injuries in the area of Denton Road and Murray Road. Officers arrived and discovered the driver and only occupant of the vehicle had sustained a single gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim has been identified as 22-year-old Zion Brown of Dothan. Brown’s vehicle was traveling on Denton Road when an unknown suspect fired several gunshots into the vehicle, one of which struck Brown. Brown’s vehicle left the roadway and traveled through a vacant lot before coming to a stop on Murray Road.

Currently there are no known suspects in this ongoing investigation. We ask that anyone who may have information related to this incident to please call The Dothan Police Department at (334)615-3000. Teen Accidentally Shoots Himself in the Leg

On Thursday, September 7, 2023, at approximately 6:40 PM, the Dothan-Houston County Emergency Operations Center received a report of a firearm assault at Henry Green Apartments on South Lena Street. Officers arrived and found a juvenile victim, under the age of 16, had sustained a gun shot wound to the lower leg. The victim stated it was an accidental self-inflicted injury. The investigation revealed several juveniles were gathered at the apartment and the victim claimed to have found the weapon laying on the kitchen counter. He stated he picked it up and pulled the trigger, not knowing if the weapon was loaded or not, firing the weapon into his leg.

Who the weapon belonged to or how it got there is unknown. The weapon was not there when officers arrived and was not located. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his non-life-threatening injury.

Woman Shot During a Domestic

On Friday, July 28, 2023, at approximately 4:50 AM, officers were dispatched to a local hospital for a gunshot victim that arrived by personal vehicle. The adult female victim arrived with an injury to the head that was later determined to be the result of a gunshot. The victim was conscious, alert, and talking but was taken to surgery due to the moderate to severe injury she sustained. Through the course of the investigation, it was determined her boyfriend, Clint Edward Browning, was the person responsible for the injury that occurred during an altercation between the two while in the 1300 block of Coe Dairy Road.

Clint Edward Browning, 45 years old of Dothan, was charged with one count of Domestic Violence First Degree. He is currently in the Houston County Jail with no bond.

Man Shot While Attempting an Assault

On Wednesday, July 12, 2023, officers responded to a firearm assault in the 600 block of North Oates Street in downtown Dothan. An individual was located in the parking lot of a nearby business suffering from a gunshot wound to the face. The individual was identified as 28-year-old Shawn Maxmillion McDaniel of Headland. McDaniel and the mother of his children are estranged and have been for some time. McDaniel attempted to get the female to meet him, but she refused. The female was in the company of an acquaintance when they realized McDaniel was following them. While attempting to get away from McDaniel, they were stopped in traffic when McDaniel exited his vehicle and approached their vehicle armed with a large knife. The acquaintance, who was legally armed with a firearm, warned McDaniel to retreat at which time McDaniel swung the knife. The acquaintance fired the weapon at that time striking McDaniel in the face.

McDaniel sustained a major injury but was conscious and alert. He drove his vehicle to a nearby business where he summoned help. The female and her acquaintance drove to a separate nearby business where they reported the incident to authorities. This incident did not involve any of the businesses where law enforcement encountered them. This is on ongoing investigation and any possible charges are pending.

McDaniel was transported to a local hospital for treatment for the gunshot wound. He was then transported to an out-of-town facility for more specialized treatment. Currently, it is not believed his injury is life threatening.

Fight Leads To Victim Being Shot At

On Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at approximately 6:10 PM, officers were dispatched to a firearm assault in the 3100 block of East Main Street, American Inn Motel. When officers arrived, the victim was found in the roadway. Dothan Fire and Rescue arrived and began evaluating the victim’s injuries and at that time it was discovered the victim had not been shot. The victim only had small lacerations to the hands. After interviewing multiple witnesses at the scene, it was determined a physical altercation took place between the suspect and victim inside a room and the victim was chased from the room by the suspect. The suspect fired a handgun at the victim while chasing him. The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment and was later released.

Joshua Immanuel Baxter, 32 years old of Gordon, AL, was charged with one count of Attempted Assault First Degree. His is currently being held with no bond. Additional charges may be forthcoming, pending the ongoing investigation.

Wanted Felon Captured by the U.S. Marshals

On June 4, 2022, Keith Shakur Helms, who was 19 years old at the time, from Dothan, was arrested for five outstanding warrants for Attempted Assault First Degree related to a shooting he was involved with in a November 2021 incident. His bond was set at $75,000.00. Helms bonded out on those charges and failed to show for court. Warrants were issued for his failure to appear, and he has been on the run since then.

On October 15, 2022, individuals were shooting at each other inside Wiregrass Commons Mall. Helms was identified as one of those shooters.

On December 14, 2022, Helms was one of two individuals who shot at a victim in the 1300 block of Alexander Drive. During this incident, four occupied apartments and one occupied vehicle were shot into.

Because Helms has been eluding capture for such a long time, the assistance of the U.S. Marshals was requested. On Wednesday, May 31, 2023, Helms was captured by the U.S. Marshals’ Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force in Ozark, Alabama. Assisting the U.S. Marshals were Dale County Sheriff’s Department and Ozark Police Department.

Keith Shakur Helms, 20 years old of Dothan, is being charged with one count of Attempted Murder, one count of Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle, five counts of Shooting into an Occupied Building, and five counts of Failure to Appear on the Attempted Assault First Degree charges. He is also being charged with outstanding misdemeanor warrants for one count of Criminal Mischief Third Degree, one count of Tampering with Evidence, one count of Attempting to Elude, and one count of Reckless Endangerment. He will be held in the Houston County Jail with No Bond.

Asking for Your Help in Solving a Year-Old Murder Case

One year ago today, early on Sunday morning, May 22, 2022, a Dothan man was murdered while outside a downtown café in the 200 block of East Powell Street. The victim was 21 year-old Jacques Adarius McLeod-Roberts, of Dothan. McLeod-Roberts was outside the business when an unknown person walked up and shot him one time. McLeod-Roberts was pronounced deceased at the scene. No motive and no suspect have been determined since then. Over the last year, investigators have followed up on many leads, all of which have been unsuccessful in bringing resolution to this case.

A family lost a loved one that day to a senseless act committed by someone who had no regard for human life. This individual should be held accountable for their actions instead of being allowed to walk free having to opportunity to kill again should they have the desire to do so. We know due to the number of patrons at and around the establishment at the time of the incident there is someone out there who knows who the person is responsible for this crime. We ask that anyone who has any information related to this incident, no matter how small or insignificant they think it may be, to please contact the Dothan Police Department at 334-615-3000. Firearm Assault in Apartment Parking Lot

On Saturday, May 20, 2023, at approximately 3:45 PM, officers responded to a firearm assault in the parking lot of 1000 South Edgewood Drive, Azalea Apartments. Officers located a male victim who sustained a gunshot wound to the upper torso. The victim was transported to a local hospital and treated for a non-life-threatening injury. After conducting several interviews and processing evidence, it was determined the suspect is a juvenile under the age of 18. The suspect is currently being sought and charges are pending. This is an isolated incident that appears to be the result of an ongoing altercation between several individuals. Due to the Alabama juvenile privacy laws and the nature of this case, no further information will be available.

Firearm Assault Leads to Other Arrest

On Sunday night, May 14, 2023, at approximately 9:45 PM, the Dothan Police Department responded to a firearm assault in the 3300 block of Denton Road. When officers arrived, they were confronted by a large crowd of people who were disorderly and non-compliant. While attempting to calm the scene, officers were able to confirm one person had been shot in the leg. While administering aide to the gunshot victim and removing him from the chaotic scene, other individuals became disorderly and non-compliant with officer’s orders.

While attempting to determine who the suspect of the shooting was, one individual, later identified as James Ward Jr., attempted to gain physical control of an officer’s duty weapon. After regaining control of his weapon, officers attempted to place Ward in custody and other individuals attempted to prevent them from doing so.

The victim of the firearm assault was transported to a local hospital where he received treatment for his non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The details surrounding the shooting are still being investigated.

James Ward Jr., 55 years old of Headland, AL, was charged with one count of Disarming a Law Enforcement Officer. His bond was set at $10,000.00.

Cameron Mar’Tese Rodgers, 20 years old of Dothan, was charged with one count of Obstructing Governmental Operation. His bond was set at $500.00.

Another individual has a pending charge of Resisting Arrest.
