Man Steals Diamonds

On Monday 10/3/2022, at approximately 2:15 PM, a white male suspect entered a Jewelry Store inside Wiregrass Commons Mall posing as a potential customer. While looking at several pieces of diamond jewelry the clerk was showing him from the display case, the suspect snatched several pieces of the jewelry and ran out of the store. The suspect entered a black SUV or Hybrid vehicle with dark tinted windows and a paper tag then drove away.

Contractor Charged with Theft from Employer

Between the first part of April and the end of May 2022, Lester Grout III was contracted to do maintenance work for a local hotel.  During this time, Grout took 21 new TVs from the storage room which he had access to as part of his maintenance duties.  He then sold all the TVs at various locations throughout the area.

CAPTURED: Authorities Are Searching For Two Con Artists

CAPTURED:  Thanks to an observant citizen in Palm Bay, Florida who spotted these two individuals, the truck and the camper in a Walmart parking lot.  The citizen called the local police and the pair were taken into custody.  Once again, help from the community has made it possible for two criminals to be taken off the street.  The pair now face charges in Palm Bay, Florida as well as multiple other states.  

On May 18, 2022, Criminal Investigators with the Dothan Police Department signed felony warrants for two con artists traveling through our area.  On May 10, 2022, Joshua William Matheny and Mary Jane Matheny were traveling in a dually pick-up truck pulling a fifth-wheel camper.  The pair stopped at the Marathon Station in the 2400 block of Reeves Street and purchased $578.00 worth of fuel.  They provided the clerk with a fraudulent credit card prior to pumping the fuel then left, leaving behind the fraudulent card.  Through the course of the investigation, it has been discovered the pair have conducted similar activities in the surrounding area, as well as other states.  Both are wanted for various felony crimes in multiple states.  They were last known to be traveling in the dually pick-up truck pictured below, pulling the fifth-wheel camper pictured also.  It has been confirmed the dually pick-up truck is stolen.

Man Charged with Theft of a Vehicle

On May 14, 2022, Phillip Gregory Sloan got into a vehicle and drove away without the knowledge of the owner while in the parking lot of a business in the 300 block of Columbia Highway.   The owner, who observed their vehicle leaving without their knowledge, requested a ride from a stranger and had the stranger follow their stolen vehicle while they called 911.  Within minutes, officers were able to conduct a traffic stop on the victim’s vehicle and take Sloan into custody.  There was no connection between Sloan and the owner of the vehicle.

Phillip Gregory Sloan, 30 years old, of Slocomb, was charged with Theft of Property First Degree.  His bond was set at $30,000.00.

Man Charged with Breaking into Vehicles and Theft of Property

On 4/23/2022 and 4/24/2022, two vehicles were broken into in the 1900 block of Melba Drive in Dothan.  Around the same time, some power equipment was taken from the yard of a residence in the 1900 block of Melba Drive.  Investigators have now charged 21 year old Davion Datron Turner, of Dothan, with two counts of Unlawful Breaking and Entering a Motor Vehicle and one count of Theft of Property Second Degree.  His bond is set at $45,000.00.

Webb Man Charged With Multiple Counts Of Identity Theft

On March 30, 2022, Jonathan Tyler Grantham, 28 years-old of Webb, AL was charged with several counts of identity theft.   Grantham obtained the victim’s personal and banking information then proceeded to make several online purchases as well as made payments on some of his personal accounts.  At this point in the investigation, it is not clear how Grantham obtained the victim’s information, but it is believed that he did not act alone.  The investigation is ongoing and more arrests may be possible.

Currently, Grantham has been charged with 15 counts of Identity Theft.  His bond is $225,000.00.

Unauthorized Test Drive Leads To Arrest

On March 11, 2022, an employee of a car lot located in the 3000 block of South Oates Street witnessed an individual being dropped off in their parking lot.  The individual quickly got into a vehicle sitting on the lot and drove away at a high rate of speed.  This unapproved test drive was immediately recognized as a vehicle theft in progress and the Dothan Police Department was notified.  Within minutes, officers located the stolen vehicle traveling on East Main Street.  A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle and the driver was taken into custody.

Jeremy Jermaine Dortch, 40 years old of Dothan was charged with one count of Theft of Property first degree.  His bond was set at $30,000.00.

Man Charged for Stealing Mowers from Local Business

On October 17, 2020, Dothan Police Investigators made an arrest in a recent theft from Rural King in Dothan.  It was discovered after the investigation that between October 10 and October 16, 2020 the suspect, Andrew Borener, went to Rural King after business hours.  While at the business, Borener stole a Husqvarna zero turn lawn mower and a Bad Boy brand zero turn lawn mower on two different occasions.  Borener was identified after also filling out a job application with the business for employment.  More charges may be forthcoming.

Vehicle Theft Arrest

The Dothan Police arrested Alec Killingsworth (18)  for the theft of a pickup truck from the 100 blk of Camellia Court on 2/28/2020. The owner was able to provide video evidence that was posted on the department’s Facebook. Investigators were able to work the tips and charged Mr. Killingsworth with Theft of Property 1st Degree. He is currently being held in the Houston County Jail.

Son Used Hatchet on Mother During Argument

The Dothan Police responded to the 1000 block of Woodlawn in reference to a domestic violence call. When officers arrived, they found a victim with hatchet wounds on the head and arm.  The suspect is Brandon Holmes (26) the son of the victim.  After the assault, Holmes tried to steal a car but was apprehended by police.  Holmes  is being charged with Attempted Murder and Attempted Theft of Property 1st and is being held on no bond. The victim is being treated for serious but  non-life threating injuries.

All persons are innocent until proven guilty.
